Thank you for your interest in the Executive Director position at Historic Tyler, Inc. (“HTI”). Founded in 1977, Historic Tyler is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with a mission “to promote the preservation of Tyler’s historic buildings, structures, and sites through education, advocacy, community involvement, and strategic investment.” We have more than 400 members in Tyler and the surrounding area.

 

The Executive Director serves as the chief staff leader and public face of the organization, overseeing day-to-day operations from HTI’s office at 110 E. Charnwood Street, advancing the organization’s strategic plan for mission execution, and working closely with the Board of Directors. A more detailed job description follows below. Application Review & Hiring Timeline

Historic Tyler, Inc. will begin reviewing applications immediately and will continue to do so on a rolling basis until the position is filled.

 

HTI anticipates beginning interviews in January 2026 and seeks to fill the position as soon as practicable thereafter. Interview timing and start date will be determined based on candidate availability and organizational needs.

Historic Tyler, Inc. – E.D. Job Description and Preferred Qualifications

 

The Executive Director is  the chief executive officer of Historic Tyler, Inc., reporting to the Board of Directors. The Executive Director provides leadership in advancing HTI’s mission, sets organizational priorities in collaboration with the Board, and oversees the implementation of programs, fundraising efforts, and operations. The position works closely with an engaged, volunteer Board and membership.  Supported by a part-time Administrative Assistant who assists with routine administrative and office functions.

 

The Executive Director serves as a non-voting member of both the Executive Committee and the full Board of Directors.

 

Other key duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

 

Leadership & Strategy

Provide leadership in pursuit of HTI’s not for profit mission and strategic goals; develop short- and long-term objectives in collaboration with the Board; and advise the Board on organizational performance, opportunities, and challenges.

 

Fundraising & Development

Identify and pursue grant opportunities; cultivate individual, corporate, and foundation donors; work with Board members to strengthen fundraising capacity; and support revenue generation through event planning and special initiatives.

 

Programs, Events & Preservation Initiatives

Provide leadership and oversight for HTI’s programs and preservation-related initiatives. Provides support to the Historic Tyler on Tour (HTOT) Chair and volunteers  for  planning and execution of HTI’s largest annual fundraiser. Help identify new preservation, advocacy, and educational opportunities consistent with HTI’s mission.

 

External Relations & Advocacy

Serve as HTI’s primary spokesperson and community representative. Maintain relationships with city and county officials, preservation boards, partner organizations, members, and community stakeholders. Manage public-facing communications, including media relations, newsletters, and social media.

 

Board & Volunteer Support

Coordinate and monitor the Board of Directors and its committees;  assist with volunteer engagement; prepare materials for Board and Executive Committee meetings; and keep the Board informed of preservation-related issues affecting the community.

 

Operations & Oversight

Oversee day-to-day operations of the organization with administrative support from the Administrative Assistant. Provide financial oversight in coordination with the Treasurer, including budgeting and expense monitoring. Ensure sound operational practices, accurate records, and compliance with applicable requirements. Supervise and evaluate staff in accordance with HTI policies.

Work Schedule, Compensation & Benefits

 

The position is full-time and based primarily at HTI’s office in Tyler, Texas, with regular weekday availability. Some evening and weekend work is required for events and meetings. Limited remote work may be accommodated as appropriate.

The position offers the following benefits:

  • Paid holidays, including New Year’s Day, MLK Jr. Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day (including the Friday after Thanksgiving), and Christmas Day (including the day before Christmas).
  • Three weeks of paid time off per calendar year, beginning six months from the date of employment.
  • One week of paid sick leave and two days bereavement leave per calendar year.
  • Compensatory time off for work outside normal business hours.
  • Reasonable advance notice to the Board President is requested before taking paid time off.

The Executive Board will conduct an annual performance review according to the process outlined the Bylaws of HTI.

Employment is at the will of the Board of Directors of Historic Tyler, Inc.  Termination may be effected upon written notice by the Board, with no severance pay.

 

Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Experience with leadership in not-for-profit organizations
  • Proficient knowledge of document creation and manipulation, website and membership database management, QuickBooks, and other business software tools
  • Ability to communicate effectively with groups, individuals, media, and members of the public
  • Ability to develop fundraising strategies in coordination with organizational needs
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and creativity
  • Flexibility and ability to work under time constraints
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize under pressure
  • Ability to work effectively with volunteers while also operating independently
  • Ability to prepare reports, business correspondence, and manage web-based content
  • Ability to coordinate and attend evening and weekend events as required

 

Education / Training

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university;
  • Five years of experience in leadership or management  roles in a nonprofit, public sector, private sector, or mission-driven organization

We are currently hiring monitors to join our rapidly expanding team. Monitors will be responsible for overseeing family visitation at various locations in and around the East Texas area. MUST be an effective oral and written communicator. Ideally our candidates would have a strong work ethic with an emphasis on punctuality. Must be able to handle sensitive topics and be willing to stand up for children and elderly at times. Must pass a background check. MUST be available to work a family case until complete. Visits will mostly take place in the community. Some weekday hours are available as well. This is an excellent second job or part-time job!

 

Job Types: part-time, contract salary: $10-15 per hour commensurate with education and experience. Education: preferably in social work or related fields. Experience: 2 years work experience. Social workers, grad students, parole offices, retired police would all be welcome to apply.
