Programs we support at Children’s Advocacy Center

Child Abuse Intervention Program

The professionals at the Children’s Advocacy Center of Smith County are part of a multidisciplinary team, including Law Enforcement Agencies, Department of Family & Protective Services, District Attorney’s Office, and the medical community, that works to detect, investigate, and prosecute incidents of child sexual abuse and severe physical abuse in Smith County. The program also provides comprehensive services to ensure children have the opportunity to tell their stories to a specially trained Forensic Interviewer, receive guidance and support from Family Advocates, and begin the healing process with our Medical Team and Trauma-Focused Therapists.

Trauma-Informed Schools

Classroom behaviors displayed by children of trauma can be misunderstood as acts of defiance when underneath the misbehavior is a child suffering from abuse, chronic stress, shame and broken trust. Being a Trauma Informed School (TIS) is a commitment to identify, understand and address the needs of children of trauma through daily practices that focus on building trusting relationships and emotional safety. Through the TIS training provided by the CACSC, schools undergo a paradigm shift which shapes school culture, classroom climate, and social interactions so students of trauma build resilience and are able to self-regulate their behavior and emotions. Following the TIS training, the Trauma Informed Strategist continues to meet with educators throughout the year to provide support and assistance in implementing the new trauma related strategies they have learned.

Mission/Vision: Our mission is to protect and restore the lives of abused children through team investigations, healing services, community outreach, and strategic partnerships.

About: In 1994, community members began to discuss a child abuse program in Smith County. The program was developed by law enforcement agencies, the Texas Department of Family & Protective Services, Child Protective Investigations (CPI), Smith County District Attorney’s Office, medical and mental health communities, and the East Texas Crisis Center. The Child Abuse Intervention Program originated as part of the East Texas Crisis Center until January 1999, when it became an independent non-profit organization. The Children’s Advocacy Center of Smith County (CACSC) exists to minimize the trauma children face when they have been victimized by physical or sexual abuse, or have witnessed a violent crime.

Children’s Advocacy Center of Smith County brings children together with law enforcement agencies and the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services, Child Protective Services investigators, prosecutors, therapists, and medical personnel in one safe, child-friendly place where the children tell their story just once.
