Home-Delivered Meal Service

The heart and soul of the Meals on Wheels Ministry, volunteers deliver freshly cooked meals to clients who would otherwise be unable to provide their own meals and live independently. Meals are not just delivered like Door Dash; volunteers take a minute to talk to the recipient and get to know them. This allows Meals on Wheels and partner agencies to learn of other concerns and help provide for our aging population. Meals on Wheels participates in Thanksgiving celebrations, Christmas gifts, winter heaters, summer fans, and other projects to increase the comfort and safety of clients.

Mission/Vision: Meals on Wheels East Texas empowers older and disabled adults to live independently in their own homes by providing nutritious home-delivered meals, safety checks, socialization, and community connection, which result in an enhanced quality of life and purpose as everyday people join us in ministry.

About: In 1973, the Governor’s Smith County Committee on Aging conducted a study to determine how the community could best care for senior citizens and found Inadequate nutrition was a significant issue. They believed that many of the elderly could continue living independently if they had help with their meal preparation. Meals on Wheels Ministry, Inc. serves a daily meal to over 2,600 older and disabled East Texans Monday through Thursday weekly; clients receive frozen meals on Thursdays for Friday lunch. These meals are prepared fresh at the central kitchen in Tyler and are then delivered by compassionate volunteers. This is often the only meal – and visitor – they may have that day. Meals on Wheels also has a pet food program allowing elderly individuals to keep and feed a companion.

Volunteer: Volunteers are a diverse group of individuals. They are business owners, retirees, students, professionals, and stay-at-home moms. The one thing that they all have in common is a dedication to serving the ill, disabled, and older residents of East Texas. All it takes is an hour to change the life of a older or disabled person in need!

In-Kind Donations: fans, pet food, car/boat/RV, blankets, towels, non-slip socks, activity books, hygiene items, etc.
